From the age of about 13 onwards, I’ve suffered from higher-than-seems-normal levels of stress and anxiety, and while I’ve mostly come to terms with being jittery and a bit doomy, I definitely wouldn’t mind being less so. I have actually had counselling before, and it does help.
And pulling back from my own (reasonably subtle) concerns for a moment, could e-counselling be the answer to the mental health concerns intensifying amongst under-30s? With cuts to mental health services really starting to bite, digitised treatment could be simply the ticket for young people who already filter nearly every element of their lives– buddies, work, sex, home entertainment– through a screen.
Not everyone is entirely encouraged that shifting psychological healthcare online is the method forward. “For me, what works in therapy is when you satisfy somebody face-to-face, in the very same space,” states London-based psychotherapist Sandra Tapie. “You learn more about not just what it resembles to speak to the individual, however how it feels to be in a room with them. Using Skype is the next best thing: it’s ‘good enough’, however it does not develop the closeness, the intimacy, that truly gets people to open and explore things.”
” I’ve performed some research study into Skype counselling,” says London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘practical equivalent’ of standard counselling; it’s just not quite the exact same thing. It’s really essential that people who engage in it know that it’s a various experience from remaining in the space with someone, speaking in person.”

” In terms of ease of access, it’s a great start and absolutely better than nothing. It’ll ideally lead them to eventually appearing in the room. However, if you’re fighting with relationship problems, accessory concerns, or much deeper concerns, it’s better to be in the space with someone. Skype and the internet provides a distance from your counsellor that might not be useful.”
In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some clients towards online programs instead of face-to-face counselling, a phenomenon that worries Dr Balick.
” My fear is that it’s happening more and more for financial factors, rather than because it’s what’s best for individuals. If it’s rolled out simply to save money and there aren’t important questions being inquired about these services, that’s not good. But then, I’m always extremely sceptical of people who are either very really professional or really really against online mental health care. It’s a case of asking the best concerns.”
Anybody with a low-end mental health problem who’s cool with getting counselled in a really internet-y, 2016-y way. If you’re living under the blackest, bleakest cloud imaginable and require serious attention (and potentially some meds), most likely isn’t for you Betterhelp Dagenham
