Anyhow, as it occurs, I am a little modified in the head– so well played, Facebook algorithms. From the age of about 13 onwards, I’ve suffered from higher-than-seems-normal levels of anxiety, and while I have actually mostly come to terms with being tense and a bit doomy, I certainly would not mind being less so. I’ve had counselling before, and it does assist. But could e-counselling not just re-hinge my mind, but do so without me needing to put trousers on and leave your home?

And pulling back from my own (fairly low-key) concerns for a moment, could e-counselling be the answer to the psychological health concerns intensifying amongst under-30s? With cuts to mental health services actually starting to bite, digitised treatment could be just the ticket for young people who already filter almost every element of their lives– good friends, work, sex, home entertainment– through a screen.

Not everyone is completely encouraged that moving psychological healthcare online is the method forward. “For me, what works in therapy is when you fulfill somebody in person, in the same space,” says London-based psychotherapist Sandra Tapie. “You learn more about not just what it resembles to talk to the individual, however how it feels to be in a room with them. Using Skype is the next best thing: it’s ‘sufficient’, but it does not create the closeness, the intimacy, that truly gets individuals to open up and check out things.”

” I’ve carried out some research into Skype counselling,” states London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘practical equivalent’ of standard counselling; it’s just not quite the same thing. It’s actually crucial that individuals who engage in it are aware that it’s a various experience from remaining in the space with somebody, speaking in person.”

” In terms of availability, it’s an excellent start and absolutely much better than nothing. It’ll ideally lead them to eventually revealing up in the room.

In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some clients towards online programs instead of in person counselling, a phenomenon that worries Dr Balick.

If it’s rolled out just to save cash and there aren’t crucial concerns being asked about these services, that’s not great. Then, I’m always really sceptical of people who are either really extremely pro or very extremely against online psychological health care.

Anyone with a low-end mental health problem who’s cool with getting counselled in a really internet-y, 2016-y way. If you’re living under the blackest, bleakest cloud imaginable and need severe attention (and perhaps some meds), probably isn’t for you Talkspace Alexa
