Lets talk Talkspace Jim…If you’re someone who delights in face-to-face conversation,,you can also arrange a video session with your therapist. Just log on at your consultation time and your therapist will prompt you to begin the video chat.

From the age of about 13 onwards, I’ve suffered from higher-than-seems-normal levels of stress and anxiety, and while I’ve mainly come to terms with being tense and a bit doomy, I certainly would not mind being less so. I have actually had counselling before, and it does assist.

And pulling back from my own (fairly low-key) concerns for a moment, could e-counselling be the answer to the psychological health concerns escalating amongst under-30s? With cuts to psychological health services truly beginning to bite, digitised therapy could be just the ticket for young adults who already filter almost every element of their lives– good friends, work, sex, entertainment– through a screen.

Not everyone is completely encouraged that moving mental health care online is the way forward. “For me, what works in treatment is when you satisfy someone face-to-face, in the very same space,” states London-based psychotherapist Sandra Tapie. “You are familiar with not just what it resembles to talk to the individual, but how it feels to be in a room with them. Using Skype is the next best thing: it’s ‘sufficient’, but it does not create the nearness, the intimacy, that truly gets people to open and explore things.”

” I’ve performed some research study into Skype counselling,” states London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘practical equivalent’ of standard counselling; it’s just not quite the exact same thing. It’s truly important that people who engage in it understand that it’s a different experience from remaining in the room with someone, speaking in person.”

” In regards to accessibility, it’s an excellent start and absolutely better than nothing. It’ll hopefully lead them to ultimately showing up in the space. Nevertheless, if you’re struggling with relationship concerns, accessory concerns, or much deeper concerns, it’s much better to be in the space with somebody. Skype and the web provides a distance from your counsellor that might not be valuable.”

In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some clients towards online programmes rather than face-to-face counselling, a phenomenon that concerns Dr Balick.

” My fear is that it’s happening more and more for financial factors, instead of due to the fact that it’s what’s finest for individuals. If it’s rolled out just to conserve cash and there aren’t crucial questions being asked about these services, that’s bad. But then, I’m constantly very sceptical of people who are either very very pro or extremely really against online mental health care. It’s a case of asking the right concerns.”

Anyone with a low-end mental health concern who’s cool with getting counselled in a very internet-y, 2016-y way. If you’re living under the blackest, bleakest cloud imaginable and need major attention (and potentially some meds), probably isn’t for you Talkspace Jim
