From the age of about 13 onwards, I’ve suffered from higher-than-seems-normal levels of anxiety, and while I’ve mostly come to terms with being jittery and a bit doomy, I definitely would not mind being less so. I have actually had counselling before, and it does help.

And pulling back from my own (fairly subtle) concerns for a moment, could e-counselling be the answer to the psychological health concerns intensifying amongst under-30s? With cuts to mental health services really starting to bite, digitised therapy could be simply the ticket for young people who currently filter nearly every element of their lives– friends, work, sex, entertainment– through a screen.

Not everyone is totally persuaded that moving mental healthcare online is the method forward. “For me, what operate in therapy is when you meet someone in person, in the same space,” states London-based psychotherapist Sandra Tapie. “You get to know not just what it resembles to speak with the individual, but how it feels to be in a space with them. Using Skype is the next best thing: it’s ‘good enough’, but it doesn’t produce the nearness, the intimacy, that actually gets people to open up and explore things.”

” I’ve carried out some research study into Skype counselling,” says London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘functional equivalent’ of conventional counselling; it’s just not quite the exact same thing. It’s actually crucial that individuals who engage in it are aware that it’s a different experience from being in the room with someone, speaking in person.”

” In terms of accessibility, it’s an excellent start and absolutely better than nothing. It’ll ideally lead them to eventually showing up in the space. If you’re having a hard time with relationship issues, attachment issues, or much deeper issues, it’s better to be in the room with someone. Skype and the web provides a range from your counsellor that might not be practical.”

In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some clients towards online programs rather than face-to-face counselling, a phenomenon that concerns Dr Balick.

” My worry is that it’s happening a growing number of for financial reasons, instead of because it’s what’s finest for individuals. That’s not great if it’s rolled out simply to conserve money and there aren’t critical concerns being asked about these services. But then, I’m always very sceptical of people who are either extremely extremely pro or really extremely against online mental health care. It’s a case of asking the best questions.”

Anybody with a low-end mental health issue who’s cool with getting counselled in a very internet-y, 2016-y method. If you’re living under the blackest, bleakest cloud possible and need severe attention (and potentially some meds), probably isn’t for you Talkspace Ratings
